Infanticide: From our cold, dead hands
30/03/10 || Wooderson
This fine piece of grind arrived in my mail the same week the Winter Olympics began and if this Infanticide cd was my wife, I guess I’d be considered a prick by the lack of attention I’ve given it. Sure I’ve spun it a few times but it was more for the sake I’ve saying I gave it a listen as opposed to really providing the respect it deserves. Well, I’ve decided that today’s the day Infanticide will get my full attention and the games can take a backseat. This will be a much needed break as Canada is playing the U.S. tomorrow in hockey and that will be one emotionally exhausting game – drinking will commence at noon! EDIT: Canada just lost to the U.S. in hockey. Good thing I’m drunk cuz this would be really upsetting if I wasn’t hammered!
Willowtip is one fuck of a great label and the fact that they have picked up Infanticide shows just how on the ball they are when it comes to releasing quality grind. With releases by Afgrund, Defeatist, Magrudergrind and now Infanticide, Willowtip have proven themselves to be leaders on the grindcore front and I have to wonder how they keep signing these stellar bands. Do the bands come to them looking for a deal or does Jason Tipton just have a some kind of crystal ball that provides direction on who he should sign next? Who the fuck knows. Just keep the quality grind coming.
Armed with a Scott Hull mastering job, “From Our Cold, Dead Hands” is a relentless attack of D-Beat, crust inspired Swedish grind that is sure to leave a skull crushing impression on anyone who crosses it’s path. With Infanticide now being on Willowtip and having a bit more exposure to the masses I’m sure the Nasum comparisons will start to surface and rightfully so. Both bands hail from Sweden and have the capacity to cause an in-voluntarily release of your bowels but that’s where the comparisons end. Infanticide is a different beast than Nasum was and while some Nasum releases have a few more dimensions to them than the average grind band, Infanticide has released a filthy, passed out drunk in a gutter, surrounded by cigarette butts type of grindcore cd.
While the backbone of their sound is D-Beat/crust, it is more of an influence as this is a metal grindcore album – make no fucken mistake about that! Songs like “Illusion Of Purpose” and “A Worse Today” are the reigning champs on here (at least for this week) and are sure to give any Napalm Death or Terrorizer fan a permanent shit-eating grin. The album also has it’s fill of death metal riffs happening which is always good in my books. This is some top-notch grind, friends!
What it boils down to is that Sweden continues to produce some amazing grind in this post-Nasum era that shouldn’t be overlooked. Even if you’re a noob when it comes to grind, this would not be a bad place to start at all as it’s solid all the way through.
One last thing. If the Swedish men’s Olympic hockey team listens to this Infanticide album before every game, those fuckers have the gold medal in the bag as they will kill everything in their path. Canada might be fucked. (Note by The Lord: I guess it’s safe to say they probably listened to HammerFall exclusively now with the answers in hand.)
